Scots Corner Early Learning and Childcare Centre is a standalone Local Authority setting in partnership with the Ministry of Defence. We are situated within the Milton Bridge area, on the outskirts of the Penicuik Learning Community along with Mauricewood, Cornbank, Cuiken, Sacred Heart, Strathesk, Bilston and Roslin Primary Schools. With two high schools, Beeslack and Penicuik along with several other funded provider partnership nurseries.
Penicuik has been growing quickly in size with several new build developments currently under development increasing the town's capacity of six hundred family sized homes. Penicuik is very well situated and can offer easy commuting to our capital, Edinburgh, as well as to the Scottish Borders and Glasgow, being part of the central belt.
The building we operate from is a very unique venture, with its main focus on being an accessible space for all. It has a community centre within the heart of the building, a shared space that is used for several purposes. Army family welfare services, offering support to the military community along with the ELCC and enclosed garden spaces.
We are a Local Authority partnership provider who deliver an all year model, supporting families for forty-nine weeks of the year, military and civilian. Closing for only two weeks at Christmas and in line with Midlothian in-service days for training opportunities for the staff team. We are available for funded and paid sessions for children ages two to five years old. Having the ability to offer this wrap-around care suits the various needs of families with a flexible, affordable childcare. The needs of families can change so quickly, along with family circumstances, therefore our session plans are tailored to the individual children.
We are registered to take thirty-four children at any one time, with a maximum of five two years olds within the session. We currently have forty-four families within our role and fifty-four percent of this being military. We have a diverse community here at Scots Corner, supporting families from right across the world.
We are very keen to build upon and promote links with our other schools, nurseries and people within the community. We have lots of ideas on how we will now work on building our capacity for stronger connections with our local area. We currently use the local area to explore for our woodland sessions and walks within the community. Having a shared use of the AstroTurf pitch at the bottom of the estate, the community centre and using these spaces as well as our quality environment helps us offer a range of experiences to our children.
Scots Corner ELC has a passionate and committed staff team, willing to go above and beyond to support our children and families. This can be seen in the practice from our vision, values and aims. The Senior Leadership Team consists of on Early Years Centre Manager and two Senior Early Years Practitioners. Along with the team being made up of Early Years Practitioners, Office Manager, Learning Assistant, Catering Assistant and facilities team.
